This collection was inspired by looking at the journey of the southern Nigeria Benin woman and how she navigates her emotions as influenced by culture and society. From the birth of her child, to the loss of her husband and then finding herself.
This collection explores birth, death and rebirth; three major cultural turning points for the traditional Benin woman, in respect to the Benin culture and how it is presented in the women of the Benin kingdom.
How she expresses joy, how she expresses grief and loss and how she expresses self actualization.
The traditional Benin woman projects these major events through the way she looks, the way she dresses and presents herself to her immediate community. I took this as a major influence in this collection, but gave it a more modern and edgy twist. Thereby introducing the audience to a traditional but more liberated Benin woman.
